Refrigerators don’t actually cool the food, the remove the heat from it, keeping it cold.  The refrigeration system has to do something with this heat so it blows it into the room with a fan and a condenser coil. 

This fan and condenser coil is typically at the bottom of the refrigerator – right at the floor.  Of course this is the best place for the coil to collect dirt, pet hair, dust, and anything else that collects in the nooks and crannies of a kitchen.  It only takes a few months for the debris to begin to insulate the coil and inhibit the refrigerator’s efficient operation.

EEK!  What can I do to prevent this? You ask.  Well there’s not a lot – dust happens.

What you can do is invest 5 minutes a month to clean the coil and keep the air flowing freely.  If the air can flow freely then the heat can be dissipated efficiently, saving you valuable money in electricity.  As a side benefit, your equipment doesn’t work so hard – so it lasts longer and is more reliable.
